An independent investigation into how trust, condition transparency and reassurance mechanisms shape purchasing confidence in second-hand e-commerce — 8 participants, 2 cohorts, and a competitor benchmark, translated into 5 recommendations that ship within CeX's existing design language.

Participants8 total, two cohorts of 4. Cohort A had bought refurbished electronics before; Cohort B had considered it and chosen not to. Recruited through Discord gaming communities — members are active consumers of games and technology, which makes the channel well matched to second-hand electronics purchasing behaviour.

Why this investigation matters
A category where the discount is the problem.
Second-hand electronics is one of the few categories where lowering the price can reduce the likelihood of purchase. A cheaper console reads as a riskier console, so the saving has to be explained rather than displayed.
That makes it a genuinely interesting problem: the obvious lever is already at its most aggressive, and pulling harder makes things worse.

Second-hand electronics carries a persistent trust gap: buyers can't inspect the product, and grading systems read as opaque.

Sequenced by expected impact against implementation cost. D2 and D3 address the two findings with the highest participant counts and need only copy and layout changes — they are the cheapest tests of the core hypothesis. D4 is last not because it matters least, but because photographing every unit is an operational commitment worth making only once the cheaper interventions have proven the mechanism.

How I'd know whether this worked
Independent research — not yet validated. Conducted without access to CeX analytics, so no conversion uplift is claimed. Each outcome below is a hypothesis with a defined validation method, requiring live A/B testing against baseline data.

Add-to-cart rate rises when condition is explained at the point of evaluation rather than left ambiguous.
GuardrailReturn rate and refund rate — honest condition detail should reduce returns. If add-to-cart rises while returns rise too, the copy is overselling, not clarifying.
Evidence required: A/B test, control vs. redesigned PDP. Add-to-cart is the decision metric; time-on-page and scroll depth read as supporting signals only — a change in either is ambiguous on its own.

What I'd research next
Test whether condition transparency reduces returns as well as raising add-to-cart — if honest grading lowers both, the commercial case is far stronger than conversion alone.
Run the same protocol with a larger Cohort B sample. Four participants identified the saving-versus-risk mechanism; it needs more weight before it justifies the pricing changes it implies.
Investigate whether trust transfers across categories — a buyer reassured on a games console may not need the same reassurance on a phone, where data security introduces a different objection.

What surprised me
Price was never the objection. I assumed a discount had to be justified against budget — it had to be justified against risk. A big saving actively increased suspicion.
What held, with a correction
People didn't need more information. They needed the same information where the hesitation happens. The grading explanation already existed; nobody was looking there.
What stays uncertain
Eight participants prove a mechanism exists, not what it's worth — and I haven't guessed. The finding I trust least came from four people and carries the largest commercial implication.
The constraint I set
Every recommendation ships inside CeX's existing components. Research that can't be implemented doesn't count.
These are the results that would tell me the model is wrong, rather than the test being badly run.

The next research question
At what point does trust stop being the barrier and price start being the barrier again — and does that threshold move with the value of the item?
